David Bathurst profile

David graduated from Kingston Polytechnic in 1987 with an Upper Second Class Honours Degree and having passed his Law Society Finals at Bristol Polytechnic in 1988 was admitted as a Solicitor in 1990.

David worked in the magistrates' courts in West Sussex as a legal adviser and then as a legal manager for over 24 years before becoming a consultant defence advocate in January 2013, obtaining criminal litigation accreditation and acquiring Higher Rights. He has been with Bishop & Light since 2018.

While working in the magistrates' court David specialised in training and developing lay magistrates and he feels his long experience in explaining the criminal law to non-lawyers, putting it into a language a non-lawyer can understand, has stood him in good stead when advising clients in the police station, the magistrates' court and the Crown Court.

As a result of the frequent occasions on which as a legal adviser he had to assist unrepresented defendants in the magistrates' court in relation to motoring matters, David considers himself an expert in road traffic sentencing and in particular the driving disqualification provisions.
